The School Play and the Star Lantern

Every time the December sea wind whipped up the hill, it bit sharply at the tip of the nose.

Inside the gymnasium of Tsukimizaka Elementary School, the air was thick with the scent of fresh wood shavings, poster paint, and cardboard.

"Kai! Open your eyes, Kai! I'll warm your frozen heart with my own warmth!"

Standing center stage, Koharu Hoshikawa pressed both hands to her chest and cried out with all her might.

It was the full dress rehearsal for their school play, The Snow Queen. Koharu was playing Gerda, the young heroine who journeys to the frozen ends of the earth to rescue her kidnapped friend, Kai.

"—Aaaand, cut! Miss Hoshikawa, your emotion is truly wonderful, but your line is 'I'll melt it with my tears.' We've corrected the script three times now, haven't we?"

Sitting on a folding metal chair in the audience, their homeroom teacher, Ms. Mori, clapped her hands with an amused smile.

"Ahaha... I'm so sorry! My own words just slipped out!"

Koharu scratched her head sheepishly, shoving her hands into the pockets of her yellow cape. Inside, Pocke squirmed around in protest.

"Koharu, changing the script without permission is taking forgetfulness way too far-pock!"

"Shh! Pocke, keep your voice down!"

As Koharu whispered her warning, a crisp, cool voice rang out from the back of the stage.

"Koharu. If you intend to treat this as a joke, I should like to request an understudy."

Seated upon an icy throne made of painted styrofoam was class president Ayame Kujo.

Sitting with impeccable posture, her straight black hair and neat violet ribbon swayed as she clutched a thick script in her hands.

"I have polished my performance as the Snow Queen to absolute perfection. I will not permit the overall caliber of this production to diminish on your account."

"Urrgh, you're so strict, Ayame..."

"I-I am not being strict! I am merely stating objective facts!"

Ayame turned her face away with a haughty sniff, but Koharu didn't miss the faint dusting of pink across her ears.

Right then—

"LOOK OUUUT! Outta the waaaay!"

Tumbling out from the stage wings came a boy dressed in a shaggy brown fur vest.

Perched upon his head were a magnificent pair of antler branches, with an adhesive bandage plastered across his nose. It was Taiga Inukai, cast as the loyal reindeer.

"Leave it to me! The whirlwind reindeer galloping across the frozen tundra has arrived... wait, WHOA! My antlers got tangled in the stage curtain ropes!"

Flailing his arms and legs helplessly, Taiga wound himself into the heavy velvet curtain, dangling like a giant moth cocoon.

Roars of laughter erupted throughout the gym.

"Inukai. Reindeer do not consume stage drapery. Furthermore, that line exists nowhere in the text," Ayame remarked with half-lidded eyes.

Taiga's face burned crimson as he thrashed.

"Shut up! I was testing an original dramatic interpretation! Somebody get me down from here!"

As Koharu giggled, a slender figure approached from the edge of the proscenium.

Silky silver hair drifting in the draft, Kanata Yomi—cast as Kai—calmly untied the knotted cord without a word.

"...Pathetic, Inukai."

"Guh... th-thanks, transfer student. I mean..."

Dropping onto his backside, Taiga looked thoroughly sheepish.

Kanata slipped his hands back into his navy coat pockets, letting out a quiet breath.

Koharu watched his quiet profile with a gentle gaze.

At school, Kanata remained the silent, unapproachable transfer student. But the Detectives knew the truth: that he was Phantom Thief Midnight, blackmailed by Wasurena—the shadow born of a century of abandonment—into harvesting memories.

Resting inside his inner coat pocket were his silver pocket watch stopped at five o'clock, and a worn, red right mitten.

When rehearsal ended, it was time to pack away the heavy stage sets.

As Koharu pushed a dust mop across the floor, Taiga's boisterous voice boomed from the back corner.

"Hey! Grab the other side! Let's haul this together!"

Taiga was calling out to Kanata, who was attempting to lift a colossal cardboard iceberg by himself.

Kanata's eyes widened in slight surprise, but he silently gripped the opposite edge.

As the two of them carried the unwieldy prop, Taiga's nose twitched vigorously.

"Hmm...? I smell freshly baked cookies from the home economics room! Chocolate chip, for sure!"

"...Look where you are walking. You're going to drop it."

"Heh-heh, I got it, Kanata!"

In that single second, Kanata froze in his tracks.

Through his silver bangs, his slate-blue eyes locked onto Taiga in utter disbelief.

"...What did you just call me?"

Flashing his sharp canine tooth, Taiga grinned with easygoing warmth.

"Huh? Kanata is Kanata! Calling you 'transfer student' forever was getting super annoying. We're buddies now, aren't we?!"

Kanata's breath caught, and then he looked away quickly.

"...Do whatever you please."

Though his response was clipped, Koharu could see the tips of his ears burning bright red.

"Did you see that, Koharu?!" Pocke whispered from her collar. "Kanata actually looked happy-pock! Taiga says something brilliant once in a blue moon-pock~"

"Yeah...!"

A wave of warmth washed through Koharu's chest.

Little by little, the ice guarding Kanata's heart was beginning to thaw. She desperately wanted to believe it.

December 10th. The day of the school play.

The Tsukimizaka Elementary gymnasium was packed to the rafters with parents, relatives, and neighbors.

In the very front row, Koharu's mother, Natsumi, was waving a large handmade banner that read Go Koharu!, while her father, Hiroshi, quietly aimed his video camera.

A few seats down sat Ayame's mother, Dr. Reiko Kujo, who had successfully rescheduled her surgeries to attend.

"I'm getting so nervous..."

Backstage, Koharu pressed a hand against her pounding heart.

"Pull yourself together, Koharu," Ayame instructed, standing beside her in a shimmering silver gown and icy crown. "If you perform as we rehearsed, there will be no issues. The evidence lies within the countless hours of practice we have logged."

"Ayame... yeah!"

"And I won't get caught in the curtains today, guaranteed!" Taiga declared, shaking his antlers.

"That should go without saying," Ayame replied with a dry sigh.

Watching their banter from the shadows of a wooden pillar, Kanata stood in silence, his hand clutching his inner pocket tightly.

Ms. Mori's piano began to play, the cue buzzer sounded, and the velvet curtain rose on The Snow Queen.

The production unfolded flawlessly. Ayame's Snow Queen was magnificent and chillingly aloof, while Taiga's energetic reindeer had the entire audience clapping and cheering.

Finally, the story moved toward its dramatic climax.

Deep within the frozen palace, Kai sat alone on the frigid floor, lost in his trance.

Dressed as Gerda, Koharu rushed across the stage, breathless.

"Kai! I finally found you...!"

The clock on the gym wall read 4:55.

Onstage, Kanata delivered a mesmerizing performance as the hollow-eyed Kai, staring blankly at a puzzle of ice.

Yet Koharu knew. The deep darkness shadowing his eyes was no theatrical act.

And then—

From speakers all across town, the gentle music-box notes of the five o'clock sunset chime began to ring.

Normally, when the chimes ended, twilight time would gently settle over the world.

But today was different.

The exact instant the final chime dissolved—

CLICK.

A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the wall clock.

Both hands stopped dead at five o'clock.

"Huh...?"

Murmurs rippled through the audience.

All the stage lights sparked violently and died with a pop.

Outside the high windows, the sky darkened at unnatural speed, as though ink were being poured across the glass.

A thick, freezing sludge of violet and black fog bubbled up from beneath the stage floorboards.

"Eek?!"

A wave of arctic air swept through the hall, frosting the windowpanes with sprawling white ferns of ice.

The cold bit into their fingers and toes with stinging pain.

And then, floating up from the heads of the parents and townspeople, tiny glowing motes of light began to detach.

Warm golden and rose-tinted motes—the light of precious memories—rose silently into the dark air.

"Oh...? Why... why am I sitting here...?"

In the front row, Natsumi dropped her cheer banner, staring vacantly at the ceiling.

"A school play...? Whose play...?"

(Mom's... Everyone's memories are being stolen...!)

From the depths of the fog, an eerie chorus of whispers resonated through the frozen space:

Gather them... Kanata... The promised hundredth memory...!

It was Wasurena's voice.

In the stage gloom, a black silk top hat and a white porcelain mask materialized in Kanata's trembling hands.

The regalia of Phantom Thief Midnight.

Don the mask, and your memories, your mother, everything shall be restored to you...!

Kanata slowly lifted the mask toward his face.

"Kanata, DON'T!"

Koharu's desperate scream made him freeze.

Kanata looked down at Taiga struggling to stand, at Ayame shielding her notebook, and at the hollow, vacant faces of the townspeople losing the warmth of their souls.

"...I remember my mother's muffler," Kanata whispered, his lips trembling. "Even having forgotten whom she is knitting it for, she continues to knit a small muffler year after year... What possible value could there be in memories stolen at the expense of others?!"

With a ferocious roar, Kanata raised his arm and slammed the white mask onto the stage floor!

CRASH!

The porcelain shattered into a thousand pieces, melting away into wisps of black smoke.

"I will never... take anyone's memories again!"

—You dare betray me as well?!

Wasurena's enraged screech tore through the gymnasium.

As if the roof had dissolved into nothingness, an endless twilight sky opened above their heads.

The dark mist coalesced into the towering silhouette of a young girl—Wasurena.

Between her misty locks, blue forget-me-not blossoms glowed with a venomous light.

Dozens of black shadow tendrils surged forward to devour the floating motes of stolen memory.

"I won't let you!"

Koharu lunged forward.

"Pocke, let's go!"

"Leave it to me-pock!"

Pocke leaped onto her left hand.

"Star Glass, open!"

Orange light burst from the star-shaped lens, transforming Koharu into her detective cape and beret.

"Leave that lost thing to me — I'll bring it home!"

She leveled the Star Glass, unleashing a beam of brilliant light directly at the mist.

SHIIIING!

Yet the moment the beam struck Wasurena's colossal form, it shattered like glass.

"What...?!"

"Pockeeey?! She's way too big—the light can't pierce through-pock!"

Wasurena's shadow writhed with mocking laughter:

Futile! A pathetic little magnifying glass cannot hope to overcome a century of solitary grief!

The black fog bore down like an avalanche. The glass lens of the Star Glass began to crack with creeping frost.

(The light... it's fading...!)

Koharu's knees buckled under the crushing pressure.

Right then—

"Koharu! Do not surrender!"

A ringing, resolute voice cut through the dark as Ayame stepped firmly to Koharu's side.

High above her head, Ayame raised the Unforgettable Notebook.

"The evidence is inscribed right here! The countless smiles of the people you have saved! You will not bear this burden alone!"

"Ayame...!"

THUD, THUD, THUD!

Heavy footsteps thundered across the stage.

"Don't you dare forget about us!"

Taiga threw aside his antlers and planted himself before them like a shield.

"Koharu never gives up! We've got your back—now blast her with everything you've got!"

"Taiga...!"

And then, his silver hair catching the wind, Kanata stepped up to stand at Koharu's right hand.

"...Hoshikawa. You told me: 'Lost things are waiting for someone to fetch them.' I want to believe too... in that light of yours."

Her friends stood shoulder to shoulder around her.

Deep within Koharu's chest, something clicked into place with absolute clarity.

Even when you forget, there are people who strive to remember you. Your friends are right beside you.

"No one has the right to steal someone's memories...!"

Koharu gripped the Star Glass with both hands, lifting it toward the endless twilight sky.

"Because I'm going to bring home... EVERYONE'S MEMORIES!"

In that glorious instant, an eruption of radiant golden light burst from the Star Glass.

Tick, tick, chime!

The brass frame began spinning like the precision gears of an intricate clockwork masterpiece.

The lens expanded, weaving into a delicate birdcage of filigreed brass, within which burned a brilliant crystal that shone like the evening's very first star.

—The Star Lantern.

The aura enveloping Koharu blazed with magnificent power.

Her cape evolved into a double-layered vestment—pure white on the outside with a blazing sunset-orange lining—fastened with plush white fur at the collar, while a delicate star tiara settled onto her hair.

On her left hand, Pocke's fluffy white wrist cuffs sparkled like constellations.

"P-Pockeeey?! Incredible-pock! Warm, glorious light is overflowing everywhere-pock!"

Koharu lifted the Star Lantern high above her head.

"Light... EXPAND!"

BOOOOM!

From the heart of the lantern, a surging wave of warm sunset energy flooded the entire gymnasium.

Wherever the radiant light touched the black fog, the darkness dissolved into harmless white steam.

GYAAAGH! It's so warm... What is this light?!

As Wasurena shrieked in agony, the floating particles of memory began dancing joyfully through the air, streaming back into the chests of their rightful owners.

"Oh my...? What on earth was I daydreaming about?"

Natsumi blinked in surprise, tightening her grip on her banner.

"Koharu! Go, Koharu, you can do it!"

Warm smiles returned to every face in the audience.

The lantern's brilliance had driven the shadow completely back—or so it seemed.

In the darkest corner of the stage, a residual pocket of black fog reared up like a monstrous scorpion's claw.

Curse you... Kanata! I will show you what fate befalls a traitor!

The shadow claw slashed across the boards, ensnaring Kanata around the waist and hauling him into the air!

"Ugh...!"

"Kanata!"

Clutching the Star Lantern, Koharu sprinted across the stage with every ounce of speed she possessed.

Leaping into the air, she thrust her left hand toward the sky.

Her fingertips brushed against Kanata's cold, slender fingers.

"Don't let go, Kanata!" she screamed through her tears.

Yet looking down into her face, Kanata let his body relax.

In his eyes, there was neither terror nor despair. Only a serene, crystal-pure peace.

Across his face spread a tender, radiant smile—one Koharu had never seen before.

Gently untangling his fingers from hers, Kanata pushed her hand back toward safety.

"...Hoshikawa."

His quiet, gentle voice reached her ears.

"Forget about me."

"What...?"

SHATTER!

A sound like a colossal mirror fracturing echoed through the void.

The dark mist swallowed Kanata whole. Space warped violently, and in the next heartbeat, both the shadow and the boy had vanished into thin air.

"Kanata...?"

Koharu crashed to her knees upon the stage.

The gymnasium fell into an absolute, haunting hush. Through the broken skylight above, the very first flakes of winter snow drifted down.

"Hey... Kanata...? Where did you go, Kanata...?!"

Taiga ran frantically across the stage, pounding the floorboards in despair.

Ayame stood motionless, cradling her notebook against her chest in stunned silence.

Right before Koharu's knees, resting alone on the bare stage floor, was a single object.

With trembling hands, Koharu picked it up.

An antique silver pocket watch on a chain.

Its hands remained frozen at exactly five o'clock.

It was the watch Kanata had kept by his side through every waking moment.

"No... This can't be real..."

Tears welled in Koharu's eyes and splashed against the cold glass face.

"Telling me to forget about you... How could I ever do that?!"

In the quiet gym, only the whisper of falling snow and Koharu's heartbroken weeping echoed into the dusk.
